The Cottage

Holly Cottage is believed to have been built around the early part of the 19th century and was originally part of a larger house, which also incorporated Church Cottage, next door. The original house was split in the year 2000 to form two separate dwellings, which were then completely reworked and renovated at the same time. Further updates and improvements have been made to the cottage over the years since then.

The accommodation comprises:
Living Room
This cosy and comfortable room is dual aspect, having traditional wooden sliding sash windows overlooking the pretty garden and village church to the front and the ruins of Slingsby castle to the side.  A cast iron wood-burning stove, set on a stone hearth is a lovely feature and is perfect for creating a cosy atmosphere on those cooler evenings. An initial basket of logs and some kindling is provided to get you started. Further supplies can be purchased from either the village shop or Hovingham Stores, which is just a couple of miles away. Please note that only seasoned hardwood or reconstituted firelogs/briquettes should be used.
There is a 37" Panasonic flat screen TV with Freeview, plus a DVD player, along with a selection of films (both classic and a little more up-to-date) for you to watch. In the pine trunk can be found various board games for those quiet evenings in. Alternatively, there is a bookshelf packed with a range of paper-back novels and some recent copies of magazines such as "Yorkshire Life" and "Country Living" for you to read. A copy of the latest local "Triangle" magazine will also be left out for your information.
The staircase leads from here up to the first floor, while double doors open onto the spacious dining kitchen.

Dining Kitchen

The well-equipped kitchen, with its stripped pine floorboards, has been recently re-fitted with a range of hand-painted, bespoke kitchen cabinets, topped with polished granite work surfaces. A sliding sash window overlooks the garden and church. Facilities include:

  • Inset ceramic Belfast sink with mixer tap
  • Neff four ring electric induction hob with filter hood above
  • Neff electric fan oven
  • Integrated fridge with small freezer compartment
  • Integrated dishwasher within a waist-level drawer unit
  • Microwave oven
  • Electric kettle and 4-slot electric toaster
  • DAB digital radio
  • All crockery, cutlery, glassware, tableware, cookware, utensils, linen etc. is provided
  • Oak bar-type dining table with 4 oak bar chairs

N.B. Please be aware that there is no washing machine within the cottage.  However, there are laundry services available in nearby Malton.


The master bedroom is dual aspect and features a cast-iron period fireplace and benefits from the luxury of a Hypnos king-size (5ft) bed. There is a built-in wardrobe, along with a range of stylish grey-painted/oak furniture which includes bedside cabinets (each having a table lamp) and a chest of drawers. There are timber sash windows to the front and side, each offering a lovely outlook. This room also has a portable DAB radio and a small pair of binoculars for guests' use.

The second bedroom has a range of solid oak furniture, comprising twin single beds, wardrobe, bedside cabinet with table lamp and chest of drawers. It has a characterful vaulted ceiling with exposed beams and a timber sash window to the front which overlooks the garden. In addition there is a Velux roof window which has a remote-controlled black-out blind fitted.

All bedding, bed linen and a hairdryer are provided.


This bright and cheerful room has a traditional Yorkshire (horizontally sliding) timber sash window and includes a 'P' shaped bath with electric shower over and wash basin with large mirror above, plus a WC with soft-close seat. There is a dedicated shaver socket and  down-lights are positioned above the mirror. A built-in airing cupboard houses the hot water cistern and offers space for drying towels etc.  A large bath sheet and hand-towel are provided for each guest.


Directly in front of the cottage lies a very pretty, fully enclosed garden. It has been landscaped and planted to provide year-round interest and also to attract insects and birds. It features a circular lawn, well-stocked herbaceous borders, a feature rose arch, a small pond with 6 resident goldfish, patio areas and gravel pathways.

At the end of the garden is a shed where you will find the garden furniture.......perfect for just sitting out in the sunshine with a mug (or maybe glass) of something and enjoying the garden, its peaceful surroundings and lovely views beyond the garden wall.

The cottage further benefits from having a single, gravelled parking space, which is accessible from the garden, via a gate.
